ABOUT ME
R. Bruce Slater, MD, of the Charlottesville, VA area has been the principal consultant at Bruce Slater Consulting since July 2016. Bruce consults with healthcare organizations in short term engagements to help with specific physician Electronic Health Record (EHR) issues and in situations where there is a gap in physician informatics leadership. He can draw on a 40-year career as a primary care internist, EHR champion, Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO), and employee at Epic, an EHR vendor.

RESUME
  1. 2016-2017
    On-site and phone support
    Completed a 6-month engagement that was extended to 9 months with a major academic healthcare enterprise to assist the CMIO in the absence of two physician informatics executives during the roll out of Epic to a new regional affiliate and to improve meaningful use compliance across the company.
  2. 2013-2016
    Vendor employed
    Worked for Epic on the physician informatics team; divided time between being subject matter expert for the developers and giving go-live and post go-live support in Epic community.
  3. 2009-2012
    CMIO at a community teaching hospital
    Led physicians during the implementation of Epic in inpatient and ambulatory sites.
  4. 2003-2009
    Recruited and Implemented Epic
    Recruited to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics/UW Health, to implement EHR. Position included clinical care in the ambulatory clinic as well as teaching with residents in the hospital. In addition, he developed a new informatics course for medical and other graduate students.
  5. 1991-2003
    Fellowship, MPH and Faculty - Associate Professor
    Started at George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, DC as a fellow in primary care, completed the Master of Public Health degree; asked to stay on as faculty; co-developed the first on-line informatics course at GWU, and was instrumental in helping implement EHR.
